The passage 2 Chronicles 7:14 lays out a problem-solving formula that includes a guaranteed promise from God, that is, IF we do our part! God has already done His part. He has set into place immutable laws of the universe which He Himself uses and follows. It is not manipulating God to simply take Him at His Word, to do our part, and to expect Him to keep His promise. He always keeps His promise!
So how do we humble ourselves? One method written in scripture is fasting. We see an example of fasting in Ezra 8:21; “There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God.” In Psalm 69:10 we read; “I humble myself by fasting…”
My own testimony is that fasting was difficult the first few times I tried it, and on occasion since. Yet, it became one of my favorite disciplines. I think in part because it brings us closer to
God—more dependent on Him—which is the essence of humility!
Once we humble ourselves, the next promise from God is that He will “…give grace to the humble,” James 4:6, and His grace is our only hope for true revival.
So, I encourage all of us to simply follow the formula for the right reasons, in child-like, simple faith and expect God to forgive and heal as we actively humble ourselves (and pray, seek Him, and repent)!
