Watch God’s Hand Carefully

“To You I lift up my eyes, O You who are enthroned in the heavens! Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until He is gracious to us.”

Psalm 123:1-2

Psalm 123 is  “A Song of Ascents” which is a group of Psalms that were sung for the Jewish festivals. With Jerusalem positioned on a high hill, these are songs that were sung on the ascent or the uphill road to the city. Jewish priests also sang these songs as they walked up the steps of the temple.

Specifically, in verse two, we are instructed to look to the Lord like servants look to the hand of their master or a maid to the hand of her mistress. Masters can give orders, protect their slaves from harm, and offer provision with their hands.

Can you imagine how our obedience to God would flourish if we would diligently watch our Master’s hand?

Just like a servant to his master, we should be looking for any slight or subtle movement of God’s hand. As obedient servants, we should act immediately to obey the commands of His hands. We must learn to eagerly watch and wait for every indication that God is giving us direction, provision, and protection.

Prayer: Oh Lord, may I be looking so attentively at Your “hand” that I may see even the slightest movement and command from You. And Lord, equip me to obey ANY command I receive from You. Please help me steer clear of distractions that would pull my eyes away from You. Lord, my desire is to be so in tune with You that I won’t miss anything You would have for me. Thank You for being a wonderful Creator, Redeemer, Friend, Chief Shepherd, Savior, and Counselor I can look to!
